District of Columbia Real Estate License Continuing Education and Renewal Date Requirements

District of Columbia real estate licenses expire biennially in odd-numbered years. To retain an active license, you must renew it before:

  • February 28 of odd-numbered years as a broker or property manager
  • August 31 of odd-numbered years as a sales agent 

All licensees must complete 15 credit hours of continuing education (CE) coursework to renew their license with the District of Columbia Real Estate Commission. This requirement includes:

Salespersons - 

  • 3 credits of Commission-approved elective subjects
  • 3 credits of DC Legislative Updates
  • 3 credits of DC Ethics
  • 3 credits on Fair Housing topics
  • 3 credits on Property Management topics

Brokers - 

  • 3 credits on Broker Supervision
  • 3 credits of DC Legislative Updates
  • 3 credits of DC Ethics
  • 3 credits on Fair Housing topics
  • 3 credits on Property Management topics

Property Managers -

  • 3 credits of DC Legislative Updates
  • 3 credits of DC Ethics

AYPORealEstate offers CE course packages designed to help you meet your District of Columbia real estate license renewal requirements. 

If you do not renew your license within 60 days of its expiration, it will become inactive. 

To reinstate an expired license, you must complete the full, 15-hour CE requirement for each two-year renewal period after the initial lapse. Licenses inactive for five or more years cannot be reinstated. 

Information on Final Exams:

The District of Columbia Real Estate Commission accepts CE course credit hours with a final exam score of 75% or higher. If you fail an exam on the first attempt, you can retake it as many times as necessary until you achieve a passing score. 

Rules for Duplicate Courses:

You can take a CE course for credit only once during each two-year renewal cycle. 

Continuing Education Exemptions:

Newly licensed real estate brokers, sales associates, and property managers must renew their license at the end of the biennial period but are exempt from CE requirements for this first term. 

If a new licensee completes CE coursework, credits earned will not carry forward into the next renewal period.

Agency Requirements for licensure
