How Do You Get a California-DRE MLO License?

To obtain a California-DRE license, you must complete 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-license education (PE). This license does not require any California-specific education. Basic Requirements for Becoming an MLO in California

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Register with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) to obtain your NMLS ID number
  • Complete at least 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-license education
  • Pass the SAFE MLO exam
  • Apply for your California MLO license
  • Obtain employer sponsorship

California-DRE MLO License Overview

There are two types of MLO licenses in California: CA-DFPI and CA-DRE.

A California-DRE license is split up into salesperson and broker license endorsements. You must be a licensed real estate professional in California to obtain an endorsement.

  • Salesperson license endorsement: for individuals who are employed by a licensed real estate broker or corporation
  • Broker license endorsement: for individuals who want to conduct mortgage loan activities either on their own or under a broker-salesperson agreement
